Company History

Amerigroup — which began as AMERICAID Community Care — was founded in 1994 to meet the needs of families enrolled in publicly funded health care programs.

Currently serving more than 2.7 million members in 13 states nationwide, Amerigroup is dedicated to offering real solutions that improve health care access and quality for our members, while proactively working to reduce the overall cost of care to taxpayers. Together with WellPoint’s affiliated health plans, we serve more than 4.5 million beneficiaries of state-sponsored health plans in 20 states, making us the nation’s leading provider of health care solutions for public programs.

1990’s: A Different Kind of Health Care Company is Born

1994: AMERICAID Community Care founded by Jeffrey L. McWaters in Virginia Beach, VA

1996: Name changes to Amerigroup Corporation

1996: Health plans launched in Texas, Illinois and New Jersey

1999: Health plans launched in Washington, D.C. and Maryland

1999: New Service Center opens in Virginia Beach, VA

1999: Membership exceeds 250,000

2000-2004: Building A Strong Foundation

AGP Listed in NYSE

2000: Employs more than 1,000 associates nationwide

2001: Completes initial public stock offering; joins NASDAQ under the symbol AMGP

2003: Existing plans expand; health plan launched in Florida

2003: Listed on NYSE under the symbol AGP

2004: Celebrates 10 years; opens new 106,000-square-foot National Support Center in Virginia Beach, VA

2005-2008: A Growing National Footprint

2005: Membership exceeds 1 million

2005: Launches plans in Northern Virginia, New York and Ohio

2006: Launches plan in Georgia

2007: Launches plan in Tennessee

2007: Accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)

2007: Forms National Advisory Board (NAB) on Improving Health Care Services for Seniors and People with Disabilities

2007: James G. Carlson becomes second Chief Executive Officer

2008: Launches plan in New Mexico

2008: Named among the inaugural Best Places to Work in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare Magazine

2009-2010: A Deepening Quality and Solutions Focus

2009: Launches plan in Nevada

2009: Disease Management Programs earn three-year accreditation from NCQA

2009: Public Policy Institute established

2009: NAB releases Declaration for Independence: A Call to Transform Health and Long Term Services for Seniors and People with Disabilities

2010: Amerigroup Foundation supports JT's Grommet Island Park and Playground for EveryBODY in Virginia Beach, VA

2010: Enters the Fortune 500 at number 404

2011: Significant Core and New State Expansions

2011: Completes new branding: Amerigroup Real Solutions in Health Care

2011: Membership hits approximately 2 million

2011: Wins bid to enter Louisiana (12th state)

2011: Wins bid to retain and expand membership in Texas

2011: West Regional Service Center opens in Houston 

2011: Employs 5,000 associates nationwide

2012: Expanding, Merging and Building Capability

2012: Launches service in Louisiana and Washington

2012: Expands in Georgia, Texas and Virginia

2012: Amerigroup Acquires HealthPlus

2012: Membership hits approximately 2.7 million

2012: Wins bid to serve Kansas

2012: Merger with WellPoint creates largest Medicaid managed care organization in the country
